How to Clean Slag from a Welding Table
Short, professional, safe answer you can use directly for customers:
1. Use a slag hammer & chisel
Tap and chip off large slag pieces first.
Fast and effective for most welding slag.
2. Use a wire brush (hand or power)
Clean small, stuck slag and rust.
Power wire brush works faster for heavy buildup.
3. Use a needle scaler (for tough spots)
Great for removing hard, fused slag.
Common tool in workshops.
4. Grind lightly only if needed
Use a flap disc to smooth high spots.
Do not over-grind — you want to keep the table flat.
5. Finish with a light coat of oil
Clean the surface, then apply a thin layer of anti-rust oil or machine oil.
Prevents rust and makes next cleanup easier.
Important Tips
Clean slag while still warm (not hot) for easier removal.
Always wear gloves, safety glasses, and mask while cleaning.
